5 Kitchen Science Experiments for Little Kids

Five simple, low-prep science experiments using only what's already in your kitchen — with the easy explanations so you can answer 'but why?' with confidence.

Science with little kids isn’t about getting the “right” answer. It’s about wonder — the gasp when something changes, the “do it again!”, the first time a child guesses what will happen and then finds out.

The best part? You don’t need a kit, a lab, or a science degree. You need what’s already in your kitchen and about twenty minutes.

Here’s my rule for every one of these: ask before you do. Before anything happens, ask “What do you think will happen?” and have them say it out loud (or draw it). That guess is a hypothesis — and just like that, your five-year-old is doing real science.

Let’s get into it.

1. Walking Water

You’ll need: 3 clear cups, paper towels, water, food coloring (red and yellow work great)

Fill the two outer cups with water and leave the middle one empty. Add red food coloring to one, yellow to the other. Roll two paper towels into ropes and drape them from each full cup into the empty middle one.

Ask first: What will happen to the empty cup?

Then wait. Over the next 20–30 minutes, the colored water “walks” up the paper towel and drips down into the middle — where red and yellow meet to make orange.

The science, simply: Water climbs the tiny gaps in the paper towel all by itself — that’s called capillary action, the same way a plant drinks water up through its stem.

2. Dancing Raisins

You’ll need: a clear glass, clear soda or sparkling water, a few raisins

Drop the raisins into the fizzy water and watch.

Ask first: Will the raisins sink or float? Will they stay put?

At first they sink. Then bubbles cling to their wrinkly surfaces, lift them to the top, pop — and the raisins tumble back down. Up, down, up, down. They dance.

The science, simply: The fizz is a gas called carbon dioxide. Bubbles stick to the raisins and act like little floaties, carrying them up. At the top the bubbles pop, and down the raisins go again.

3. Magic Rainbow Milk

You’ll need: a shallow dish, whole milk, food coloring, dish soap, a cotton swab

Pour a thin layer of milk into the dish. Add a few drops of different food colors near the middle — don’t stir. Now dip one end of a cotton swab in dish soap and touch it to the milk.

Ask first: What will the colors do when the soap touches them?

The colors explode outward and swirl into a moving rainbow. Touch a new spot and it happens again.

The science, simply: Milk has a little fat in it, and soap loves to break fat apart. When the soap hits the milk it goes racing after the fat — and the colors ride along for the show.

4. Sink or Float?

You’ll need: a big bowl or the sink, and a handful of small household objects (a cork, a coin, a grape, a spoon, a plastic lid, a crayon…)

Gather your objects on the counter. Before each one goes in, hold it up and ask: sink or float? Make two piles for your guesses first.

Then test them one at a time and sort them into the real two piles.

The science, simply: Whether something sinks or floats depends on how heavy it is for its size — that’s called density. The fun is in the surprises: a big light thing floats, a tiny heavy thing sinks. Guessing wrong is the best part — say so!

Ready for more? Grab a ball of foil. Crumple it tight — it sinks. Shape it into a little boat — it floats. Same foil! Let them figure out why.

5. Grow a Bean in a Jar

You’ll need: a clear jar or ziplock bag, a paper towel, a dried bean (pinto or lima work well), water

Dampen the paper towel and press it against the inside of the jar. Tuck a bean between the towel and the glass so you can see it. Keep the towel damp and set it somewhere with light.

Ask first: What does a seed need to grow? What will we see first — the root or the leaves?

Then watch, a little each day. In a few days a root pokes down; then a shoot reaches up. Have them draw it once a day — that daily drawing is the science journal, and comparing the pictures shows change over time.

The science, simply: A seed holds a tiny plant and its own packed lunch. Give it water, warmth, and light, and it wakes up and grows. This one takes patience — which is its own good lesson.

A few things to remember

  • You don’t need all the answers. “I don’t know — let’s find out together” is one of the best sentences in homeschooling.
  • Let them repeat it. Doing an experiment five times isn’t wasting supplies — repetition is the experiment.
  • Talk more than you test. The looking, guessing, and wondering matter more than the result. Ask what did you see? what surprised you? what if we changed one thing?
